Magnetic Particle Inspection Method: Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), used to find surface / near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials, is a multi-purpose inspection method used for field and factory applications. Magnetic particle inspection works by magnetizing a ferromagnetic sample using a magnet or special magnetizing equipment. If the sample has a discontinuity, the magnetic field passing through the sample is interrupted and a leakage area occurs. Finely rolled iron particles coated with a dye pigment are applied to the sample. These are attracted to leak areas and collected to form an indication directly on the discontinuity. The indication in question is detected visually under appropriate lighting conditions.
